The trend towards dynamic and dazzling danglers is not new; statement earrings have been popular for years. There was the brightly coloured mod jewellery worn in the 1960s by fashion icons such as Twiggy.
The 1970s saw huge gold hoops and the 1980s were all about bright primary colours and the glamour that large earrings added to an outfit. And now, dramatic statement styles have made a comeback, with designers sending their models strutting down the catwalk dripping in statement jewels.
At Balenciaga’s Fall 2016 show, the designer Demna Gvasalia reimagined several of Cristobal Balenciaga’s iconic brooches as pieces of jewellery, including unique earrings. These huge jewelled earrings in particular showcase the the glamour and wow-factor that can be brought to a simple outfit by a statement earring.
Saint Laurent’s Spring 2017 show brought collarbone sweeping earrings in a variety of vibrant colours, with these bright tassel earrings bringing extra pizzaz to Anthony Vaccarello’s 80s inspired debut to Saint Laurent.

The vibrant red jewel in the centre and wing-shaped diamante make these earrings look like glamorous firebirds. So its no wonder Butler & Wilson’s unique and over-the-top designs were worn by the famous. Princess Diana, Jerry Hall, Madonna and many more celebrities were all ardent fans.
These stunning Deanna Hamro drop earrings feature a ladder of baroque pearls that creates a luxurious and decadent feel. From the 1980s, these earrings highlight how Hamro’s glamorous and stylish jewellery is undeniably desirable. Just ask designers such as Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, who often called upon Hamro to design beautiful earrings and other jewellery for their collections.
This gorgeous pair of Yves Saint Laurent earrings feature turquoise poured glass stones, with hints of gold accentuating the beautiful blue, guaranteed to brighten up any dull outfit! By Claire Deve, these are from the 1980s, when Deve designed jewellery for fashion’s most prestigous designers such as Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Claude Montana. Her work is now highly saught after and hard to find.
